Important facts
Weather conditions are changeable and difficult to forecast precisely.
The fog rises very fast.
Windless days are unusual (July and August are the months when sea kayaking conditions are the most favorable).
The tidal currents are strong between the islands.
The southern part of the Archipelago is more exposed to sea swells breaking out against the sandbanks.
The water is very cold. Caution is essential everywhere and at all times.

Legend
Reef
Zone of tidal currents superior to approximately 2 knots (3,6 km per hour)
Current direction in rising tide

Current direction in ebbing tide
1. West side of Longue Pointe (Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan village). Beware of westerly, southwesterly and southerly winds. Very choppy sea during rising tide becoming more accentuated when there are winds opposite to the tidal current.
2. Île Nue and Île aux Perroquets complex. Beware of westerly and southwesterly winds. Possible difficulties with crossed currents.
3. The channel between Longue-Pointe and Île Nue. Beware of westerly wind during rising tide. High, brief and very close waves. Strong current, approximately 3 knots (5.5 km per hour).
4. Alongside the coast between Longue-Pointe and Mingan. Beware of westerly and southwesterly winds. Surfing waves breaking close to the coast and against a strip of small sandbanks.
5. Mingan Harbor (between Île du Havre de Mingan and Mingan village). Beware of westerly and southwesterly winds during rising tide. Crossed currents. Short and abrupt waves caused by the presence of sandbanks along with a Venturi effect increasing the speed of the wind. Strong current, approximately 2.5 knots (4.57 km per hour).
6. Mingan Channel (between the Archipelago and the coast). Beware of westerly wind during rising tide. Big counter-current waves tending to break out. Beware of southerly and southwesterly winds. Crossed currents created by tidal streams.
7. The channel between Île à Bouleaux de Terre and Île à Bouleaux du Large. Beware of westerly and southwesterly winds during rising tide. Large breakers at the west entrance of the channel. Sandbanks. Venturi effect. Strong current. BE CAREFUL. In times of spring flood or after heavy rains, very strong current caused by the Mingan and Romaine rivers' rising waters.
8. Grande Île (west, south and southwest sides). Beware of westerly, southwesterly, southeasterly and easterly winds. Big waves.
9. The Channel À La Proie or Le Grand Channel (south entrance between Grande Île and Île Quarry). Beware of southerly and northerly counter-current winds. Short, abrupt and very close waves. Fast current, approximately 2 knots (3.6 km per hour). Presence of sandbanks.
12. Île Grosse Romaine (north side), Île Petite Romaine and the bay of Romaine River. During ebb tide: coastal flats, shallow water, exposed silt banks. Difficult access.
13. The mouth of Romaine River. Beware of overflowing currents after heavy rains, especially during spring. More specifically during ebb tide under westerly winds. High breaking waves under counter-currents, big whirls.
